There’s no shortage of people blaming others for their situation in life. We’ve all been guilty of this at some point or another. Of course, some situations are complete anomalies or bad things that happen to good people. But, if you’re going to be a victim of your own making, be a victim of your success!

Success lives in many forms

It’s up to you to create your own definition of it. For some, success is living a comfortable life and always having a little more than enough in the bank. For others, it’s having the ultimate freedom to enjoy life without having to work for anyone but themselves. Sometimes, success can be related to specific goals such as reaching a specific weight, obtaining a dream job, buying a beautiful home, or raising amazing kids.

How do you become successful?

Extreme Ownership!

If it’s your goal, it’s up to you to make it happen. Playing the blame game will only set you back. Sure, maybe so and so didn’t do something, but you need to take it upon yourself to find another way to achieve your goal.

Did you get passed for a big promotion despite the fact that you were the best fit for the role? Don’t blame others. Continue to inspire through your efforts. Ownership is about owning your projects and supporting those around you to achieve success. Ownership is not limited by your role or job title. Own your process, own your responsibilities, and work with your team to achieve your goal. “Until you take ownership of your life, you will always be chasing happiness.” (Sean Stephenson)

Ownership does not mean you have to be controlling or bossy. Ownership is ensuring the project will be done on time because you will do everything in your power to make it happen. Think back to working on a group project in school. There was always at least one person that made sure the project was done right and by the deadline. The person led the team by taking accountability for the project.

As a side gig entrepreneur, extreme ownership is the only way to survive. “Accept responsibility for your actions. Be accountable for your results. Take ownership of your own mistakes.” (Anonymous) Making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn but only if you take accountability for it. Blaming others for their mistakes as it relates to your project only sets your project back and weakens the team. While you cannot control the output of others, you can inspire through your efforts by taking the blame when things go wrong. Show the team that you’re going to shield them from external parties, but they need to be open and honest with you when things don’t go according to plan.

The Shield that Protects Your Team

Shielding others is a great way to earn their respect and loyalty. Why do you think quarterbacks are often the leader of a football team? There are plenty of inspirational athletes on the team, but the quarterbacks are accountable for losses; yet, the quarterbacks are the first to share wins with their teammates.

“It is only when you take responsibility for your life that you discover how powerful you truly are.” Allanah Hunt
There is no shortage of inspirational quotes on this subject. Define your goal or project outcome and do everything in your power to make it a reality. Own it. Make mistakes. Take the blame. Hold yourself to higher standards than others. You are in control of your future. Take control and never give up.
